Free Research Series at the Family History Library in May

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH - Genealogists and family history enthusiasts looking for help with research in the following areas will be interested in classes held at the Family History Library in May.

A free Mid-Atlantic States Research Series will be held on Saturday, May 4, at the Family History Library. The classes will include:
       9:15 a.m.    “New Jersey”
     10:30 a.m.  “New York”
     11:45 a.m.  “Pennsylvania”

A free Norwegian Research Series will be held on Saturday, May 4 at the Family History Library. The classes will include: 

       9:15 a.m.    “Basic Elements of Norwegian Research” 

     10:30 a.m.    “Vital Records in Norway”

     11:45 a.m.    “Emigration and Printed Sources”

A free workshop on “Older English Handwriting” will be held on Saturday, May 18 at the Family History Library.  The workshop will run from 9:15 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. and the topics are:
       9:15 a.m.    “Introduction & Examples”
     11:45 a.m.    ‘Hands-on Practice”

A free Hispanic workshop (taught in Spanish) on Searching for Ancestors in FamilySearch will be held on Saturday, May 18 at the Family History Library.  The workshop will run from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. and the topic is:
       1:00 p.m.    “La búsqueda de antepasados en FamilySearch”
El sábado 18 de mayo de 2013 la Biblioteca de Historia Familiar en Lago Salado habrá un taller hablada en español.  El tema del taller es:  “La búsqueda de antepasados en FamilySearch.”  El taller empieza a la 1 de la tarde y durará una hora y media.  Estará en la sala de computadores en el piso principal de la Biblioteca de Historia Familiar.

African-American and Swedish Research Series Classes at Family History Library in February

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH -- Genealogists and family history enthusiasts looking for help with African-American research will be interested in African-American classes held at the Family History Library in February. A free African-American Research Series will be held on Saturday, February 11 at the Family History Library. The classes will include:

 9:00 a.m.    “Four Key Resources for Research”

10:15 a.m.  “Genealogical Proof Standard for Solving Research Problems”

11:30 a.m.  “Southern Plantation Records”

For those looking for help with Swedish research a free Swedish Research Series will be held on Saturday, February 25 at the Family History Library. The classes will include:

 9:00 a.m.    “Swedish Military Records and Strategies - Army”

10:00 a.m.  “Swedish Military Records and Strategies - Navy”

11:00 a.m.  “Reconnecting with Living Relatives in Sweden”

American Indian and German Research Classes

The Family History Library in downtown Salt Lake City offers free Research Series, classes and workshops for the public.  The following classes are scheduled for 5 November 2011.

American Indian Workshop  - Runs from 10 to 11:00 am

German Research Series - Begins at 9:00 am and continues throughout the day until 4:20pm. There will be a break for lunch mid-day.

Family History Library to Hold Free Research Series Seminars

SALT LAKE CITY — On Saturday, October 8, 2011, the Family History Library is offering an all-day seminar on U.S. Immigration Research.  The topics include:  “U.S. Immigration, 1820-1954,” “U.S. Naturalization Records,” and “Canadian Border Crossing Records.”  Classes will run from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Family History Library to Hold Free Lecture on “The Cornish”

SALT LAKE CITY — On Friday, September 9, 2011, the Family History Library is offering a free lecture with guest speaker, Philip Hosken, from England.  Philip was the former editor and publisher of the Cornish World magazine.  The lecture is titled, “The Cornish:  A Celtic Nation Found Throughout the World.”  Philip will review the history and culture of the Cornish people and how their mining industry and inventiveness shaped their existence and eventually drove them to all corners of the Earth.  Lecture will run from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

FREE Training in Utah and Salt Lake Counties!

So much to learn, so little time! But, I'm trying to make it a little easier by letting you know what training is available in and around these valleys. Check out the calendar at the bottom of this blog.

I have started adding the training classes for the Riverton FamilySearch Library, their Saturday Seminars held every 3rd Saturday each month, the Family History Library in downtown Salt Lake, and the Utah Valley PAF Users Group (UVPAFUG) in Provo held the 2nd Saturday each month (except December).

There is a direct link to their training pages just above the calendar so you can double check me or look for last minute changes. But I'm listing all the classes on one calendar.

If you know of other FREE training available in either county please let me know and I'll add those to the calendar also. As you can see, there is training available almost every day so don't waste one precious minute of your time! Start learning today!

Update to the Family History Conferences

The last week of April four major family history conferences will all happen in one week in Salt Lake City as I described in the last post.  FREE CLASSES are being made available to help Family History Consultants and workers help members find their ancestors.

Of particular note for family history consultants are classes and a fireside on Tuesday, April 27. Simply bring the Free Consultant Training Pass coupon below for access to the consultant classes. There is also no cost for attending the fireside or any of the other events listed below.

If you want to attend the NGS conference classes, price and registration information can be found here. There is an early-bird discount until March 8, 2010. 

Over 200 classes will be presented by industry leaders and experts from the local and national genealogical community as well as staff from FamilySearch. Products and services from genealogy companies will be showcased in an exhibit hall. There you can also meet with specialists for free personal consultations on research questions or problems.

Tuesday, April 27

·         Consultant Training Seminar at the Conference Center Little Theater. There are two times to choose from: 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. or 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.

·         Behind-the-scenes tour of the Family History Library (all day) 

·         Behind-the-scenes tour of the new Church History Library (4:00 to 6:00 p.m.)

·         Consultant Fireside at the Salt Lake Tabernacle at 7:00 p.m. The speaker will be Elder Allan F. Packer of the First Quorum of the Seventy, who is one of the Executive Directors of the Family History Department.

Wednesday, April 28

·         FamilySearch Open House at the FamilySearch Center in the Joseph Smith Memorial Building from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Meet and greet product managers and designers for FamilySearch’s new programs and offerings.

Wednesday, April 28–Saturday, May 1

·         GenTech Hall, an exhibit displaying the latest technological innovations for family history in the same venue as NGS, is open and free to the public.

·         The NGS Conference Exhibit Hall is open to the public daily 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. 

Thursday, April 29

·         “A Celebration of Family History” event in the Conference Center at 7:00 p.m. This evening will feature the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square, along with wonderful guest speakers. Special reserved tickets for this event will be available for consultants. Instructions on how to request tickets will be e-mailed to you in the next few weeks.

Saturday, May 1

·         Genealogy Kids Camp, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the Salt Palace conference venue.

Additionally:

·         Hours at the Family History Library have been extended until 11 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday during the conference. (Closed during the Thursday celebration.)

Use the Church HISTORY Library to enhance your FAMILY History

Are you one of many who are still trying to determine the difference between the LDS Family History Library and the new LDS Church History Library?
